By Sylvia Sidesaddle Well, hello again darlings! Syl must confess to something her sweet things probably don’t know—Syl invariably comes sliding to the finish line barely in time to make the print date with her column most months. So sometimes, she is forced to keep it brief, and this month is one of those! So on to the news. The US team for the FEI Driving World Championships in France has been announced and naturally locals will be packing their tack trunks. The team will in- clude Chef d’Equipe Dee Aldrich , Team Coach Suzy Stafford , and Team Veterinarian Dr. Jon Furlong. Donna Crookston and Viktor, her 2008 Dutch Harness gelding, have been selected as alternates. Make us proud team! Congratulations to local eventers Ryan Wood and Lilian Heard on their wedding in late June! Among the guests at their nuptials in Kauai, Hawaii—se- lected for its equal access to the US and to Ryan’s native Austra- lia--were neighbors Boyd and Silva Martin . Ryan works out of Phillip Dutton’s True Prospect Farm in West Grove, PA and Lillian is just down the road from the Martins in Cochranville, PA. As Syl writes, the US Event- ing Team is just about to start competition at the Nations Cup Canada at Bromont. On the team are newlywed Lillian Heard and Dassett Olympus, and Colleen Rutledge (Frederick, Md.) and Covert Rights. Best of luck all! Not local but too good not to share….the Big Horn Polo Club in Wyoming had to apolo- gize to players and spectators on Facebook after the version of the national anthem played before the game was the 12-minute version Jimi Hendrix played at Woodstock. “When we heard where things started going wrong we were faced with the choice of stopping it or hoping to god it would finally just end,” the post said. LOL darlings!!!! Brandywine Horse Shows, normally held at the Devon Show Grounds in mid-summer, has called it quits after 12 years. As if Covid wasn’t enough, Traverse City Horse Shows in Michigan was awarded the Junior Hunter Finals, held on conflicting dates, writes equestrian journalist Nan- cy Jaffer . Though show manage- ment was willing to work with Brandywine, the USEF torpedoed a date change. And so it goes. No juniors = few trainers = few entries, but of course you knew that you sweet things. Kevin Babington update: the Irish Olympic show jumper, formerly of Glenmoore, PA, who was paralyzed in a 2019 acci- dent at the Hampton Classic, has undergone more surgeries and is now experiencing new feeling in his ankle, back, and toes. He spends many hours each week in grueling physical therapy and is now ably assisted by his Austra- lian Shepherd service dog, Sa- mantha, provided by the Canine Support Team Foundation. Inter- estingly, the foundation’s support dogs are trained by inmates at a California prison who are in turn trained by trainer Chase Palm- er . The inmates work one on one with the dogs for a personal training journey that also teaches life skills. Looking for bomb-proof darlings? The Newark Mount- ed Police unit retired one of the Standardbred Retirement Foun- dation's graduates, who is now back at the SRF farm looking for a new home. “Guinness may be 23 but he has lots of miles to go,” the group said. The application is on adoptahorse.org . And, short but sweet, that’s it for Syl for another month! Until next time, S.S.S. (Send Syl Scoop) at PAEquest@aol.com . And…be careful where you step!
