Maryland Horse Rescue Throws First Birthday Party for Surprise Foal the best-behaved yearling she’s been around in a while.” From noon to 4 p.m. on July 31 volunteers and staff from the rescue gathered with others who were involved in his care. It was a celebration for CAM, but also for the first birth at the rescue. They call him the Miracle Horse. With a birthday hat and tie for CAM, a happy birthday song, and hamburgers and hotdogs, the celebration was important to all who attended. “We had the party because he was the first one born to us,” Biemiller said. “But I also think it came at a time – during Covid – when it brought some happiness and some excitement. And then, to see the changes in Cassie… She went from a horse who was skit- tish and didn’t want to be touched to a horse who is now loving, one that allowed us to come in to see and touch her foal. To see her come from a horse in such poor condition to one who produced this beautiful foal, and during a pandemic - it was the shining star in the middle of the night.” Having Cassie come to the Maryland Horse Rescue was luck of the draw, according to Biemi- ller. And that luck doubled when the Davis family stepped in. “Cassie could have ended up anywhere else, but she ended up with us, and we want to celebrate her success as well as the birth of our big boy, CAM,” Biemiller said. “It’s also about two volun- teers who completely rearranged their lives and their horses’ lives to make a safe place for this rescue horse to give birth and to thrive.” Biemiller glows when she talks about this success story. “They have done an absolutely amazing job with him,” she said. “He gets a halter on and off, leads, has his feet done regularly, and she can fly spray him. He is going to be a nice horse for someone. The mare is about 15.1 hands, and we think he will be at least that if not bigger.” All who are involved say that CAM will likely not be adopted out until he is two years old, so that he has a good foundation behind him. “We are very conservative with our approach to adopting out,” said Biemiller. “We do farm checks, background checks, we talk to neighbors… but nothing is foolproof. We can’t predict, and we want to be sure he is safe.” In the meantime, the Davis family is considering adopting both CAM and Cassie, although they have not yet decided. “My grandson was born on his birthday,” Tina Davis said, wondering if that is a sign. The rescue’s motto is "No Horse Left Behind”. They've taken in blind horses, elderly horses, in- jured, neglected and starving horses over the years, and a year ago, they added a newborn foal to the list.
