HORSES By Malorie de la Mare Dear Mal… Like many of my “horsey” friends, I’m in a social me- dia group focusing on horses, riding, trails and other themes we have in common. The group has expanded over the past several months and now there are members from all over the country—even some from overseas. At first, it seemed exciting to hear from so many people who have, ride and enjoy horses. Lately, though, the tone of commentary has changed. And not in a good way. There were a few commenters who suggested that equestrian sports are inherently cruel. They talk- ed—and included really gross pictures—of incidents in which horses had been injured during competition. Soon there were comments that cranked up the angst about equine welfare. Last month, the comments and the anger and the grotesque pictures hit the boiling point. Our little group of trail and horse lovers had been swallowed up by a bunch of people who seemed bent on changing the conversa- tion to horror stories, bad news and grievances. How does this happen? Our original group of friends feels like we’ve been hi- jacked and now we’re hostages Social Media freelancer wanted for East Coast Equestrian. Ask da Mare Toxic Social Media Posts Hijack Group of this angry—and increasingly hateful—mob. What do you think we should do? - Sad Hostage Dear Sad Hostage… Yours is a situation that has become all too common. It seems there’s an undertow of grievance and resentment swirling around us—simmer- ing outrage looking for enough oxygen to stoke its fire. Alas! What you once enjoyed for its innocent news and infor- mation-sharing has become a snake, slithering through, and wrecking all the promise that social media once held. Ugh! What can you do? QUIT! NOW! Contact your real friends and agree to find different ways to share your love and interest in all things equine. I know, I’m basically a fuddy-duddy who recalls a time when we reached out to friends via phone, mail, or even email, moderating our own content without the help of algorithms that seek to ratchet up the anger instead of to spread useful, interesting informa- tion. Sometimes, my friends and I get together for lunch or a glass of wine, or lunch and wine. The social media drama is addictive, but ultimately can be destructive. To be clear, there are legitimate issues of animal welfare that everyone who cares about horses should understand. But suffusing these issues in the toxic brew of social media’s outrage machine does not equate to intelligent, reality-based at- tention. So, my advice to you is to exit the outrage machine be- cause it’s clear you can’t shut it down by posting more positive, less incendiary content. Don’t waste your precious energy on a vessel that is kept afloat by negativity and anger. You’re too good for that! Your friends and your horses need your positive energy and your optimism. Find a place where you can get together with your friends and engage in something we used to call conversation. Trust me. It’s a blast! Dear Mal… So, I’ve got a friend who is pestering me for the stuff I used when my horse recently had a bout of thrush. I had mentioned to her that Spike had devel- oped thrush. She was alarmed, and wondered what that was, and if my horse, Spike, would be okay. I reassured her that it was fairly common and benign but it required my attention as well as the attention of Spike’s farrier. Next thing I knew, my friend told me she was dealing with toenail fungus and thought the stuff I was using on Spike’s hoof might help her toenails. What? She asked me to give her some of it so she could use it on her toenails. Um, how did we get here? I told her to contact a dermatologist to make sure that she actually does have toenail fungus, and to find a treatment meant for human nails and not horses’ frogs. She got all huffy, and said that we’ve been friends for a long time and she thought she could “trust” me to help her. Your thoughts? -Spike’s Mom Dear Spike’s Mom… I’m going out on a limb here, but I’m guessing you’re neither a dermatologist nor an expert on toenail fungus. The operative word here is “fungus.” Thrush is a bacterial infection, although fungus may hop on the bacteria train for a free ride to give Spike a little more trouble. Your friend seems to be both naïve and thoughtless. Okay, I’ll also suggest she might not actually be as much of a “friend” as you thought. Many of the over-the-counter products used to treat thrush come with warnings to avoid contact with skin. Some contain less toxic ingredients, but are not recommended for treating human conditions. Your friend is asking you to give her something that could harm her, and would likely not cure her problem, whatever it is. She has concluded that something that happened to a horse’s foot is the same thing that happened to her toenail; and she expects you to confirm her bogus logic by indulging her perverse belief that that is what friends do. They don’t. Actual friends, thoughtful friends, friends who sincerely care about others would do what you did. You suggested she see a dermatologist, so she could get the proper treatment for whatever is happening to her toenails. In return, she accused you of being—what?—not a good friend? You asked how we got here? I really don’t know, but it appears that ignorance is be- coming the “new normal” among a lot of people. Encourage your “friend” to do her own research to find over-the-counter or home remedies and wish her luck. Have a question for Mal? Email her at PAEquest@aol. com.
