Page 12 November 2020 EAST COAST EQUESTRIAN Winter Ready Special Advertising Section Horse sports involve a lot of leather! And leather is expensive. Boots, gloves, saddles, harnesses, reins, carriage seats, whips and more: Pecard Eque-Care will pro- tect those investments, prolong- ing their life. Transitioning to winter is the perfect time to apply Pecard to leather. Over time, the natural oils of leather dissipate causing the fi- bers to shrink and stiffen. Untreated leather will eventually crack and break—expensive and potentially dangerous. By conditioning the leather twice a year with Pecard’s Eque-care conditioners, the leather’s suppleness is restored, al- lowing the fibers to move and flex. Other elements like sunlight, heat, water, snow, salts, and dirt will rob leather of its oils. Applying leather conditioner before winter will keep the leather pliable and protect it, creating a protective barrier on the surface of the leather to help repel the elements. Pecard, founded in 1902, still hand crafts the same conditioner Prepare All Your Leather for the Winter Ahead with high quality ingredients. In 1928, Admiral Richard E. Byrd solely chose Pecard to protect his gear and crew on the first expe- dition to the South Pole and later Arctic expeditions called Opera- tion Deep Freeze. With 118 years’ experience, Pecard is a brand you can trust. Leather care products are the only thing Pecard makes. Cold, wet, muddy conditions create a ‘perfect storm” for a frustrating equine skin condition: Scratch- es (aka Mud Fever, Greasy Heel). This chronic, progressive equine dermatitis infects the deep layers of skin in the heel Banixx ™ Keeps Scratches/Mud Fever at Bay During a Cold, Wet Winter and pastern. Scratches is a fungus but, can have a bacterial component in more advanced stages, making it tougher to treat. Horses that spend time in damp, muddy pastures are more susceptible because their legs and ankles are constantly moist. Moreover, it’s a more common occurrence for show horses that spend the majority of their time in rings where the sand has been intermingled with manure. Ad- ditionally, these horses receive more baths (so this means wet legs) than their pasture counter- parts. How do I keep my horse from getting scratches? If possible, keep your horse in a clean, dry stall and away from wet, muddy pastures. Avoid early morning turnout when there is heavy dew, and, when you bring your horse in, dry his legs and check for early signs of infection. For show horses, spray Banixx liberally as a preven- tative after washing his legs or work. Since Banixx provides an inhospitable environment to both bacteria and fungus, stay ahead of the game by applying it regularly to the lower legs and pasterns, particularly if your horse is prone to this ailment.
