Versatile Pennsylvania Horse is Named Arabian Horse Association Ambassador A 27-year-old gelding, King is owned by Adrienne Morella of West Chester, PA, who has had him since he was just 9 years old. A QVC television shopping network model and photographer, Adrienne is a life-long horseper- son, but she had gone many years without a horse. “My mom got me into horses. She was a trail guide when she was a teenag- er,” Adrienne said “We had a half-Arabian when the Arabian show was at Devon. I love all horses but especially the sensitiv- ity and connection you get with Arabians.” In 2006 she started taking lessons with Mary Ann Rafferty who bred and owned King. Adri- enne was riding King for lessons, knowing he was for sale. When she could not ride him one day because someone was coming to look at him as a possible pur- chase, she found herself thinking seriously about whether she could commit to a horse of her own again. “I ended up buying him,” Adrienne said. “We just started going out to little horse shows and he’s just fun as a trail horse, companion, show horse, and we even got into dressage.” King had been shown in Hunter classes at Arabian horse shows, but Adrienne was more of a western rider, so King learned that new division and later started dressage. The first time Adrienne took King to a dressage show, he scored a 68% in his training level test. From there he moved steadi- ly upward until he was working at second level before his career was temporarily derailed. When he was 15, King suffered a suspensory tear and Adrienne was told he wouldn’t be able to be ridden again. As it ended, he was retired from riding for six years, during which time he had to have eye surgery for keratitis. Eventually, Adrienne saw that King was getting better, and she began trail riding him. At the age of 23, King went back to the Arabian show ring. “Everything we went in we won,” Adrienne said. “We went to Regionals in Virginia, won three or four championships and qualified for Nationals. I thought, we may not ever have a chance to do this again.” Adrienne and King were very successful, earning a U.S. National Top Ten award by plac- ing seventh in Ranch Riding. At that time, in 2020, Ranch Riding was a new discipline in the Arabian show world, but it was a good fit for King. Adrienne thought that dressage would be too demanding for King after his injury, but he was very good with transitions and patterns. “There was a pattern but it wasn’t as long as a dressage test,” Adrienne said. “We ended up getting amazing scores. That was something that was fun for us. Another class is Ranch Rail, he really did well in that too.” Adrienne is especially proud of her accomplishments with King, because she has done his training herself. Though she has worked with professionals she has done the riding on her own horse. “Even when I had my les- sons I didn’t have anyone else ride him. I want to do the work. Everything I’ve done I’ve done myself,” Adrienne said. ”He’s amazing. We kept riding and he did even better the next year.” King has Regional Cham- pionship Show wins across multiple disciplines: dressage, western dressage, ranch horse, hunter pleasure, western pleasure and sporthorse. “A lot of people have a stigma about Arabians. King’s really a doer. He’s very smart,” Adrienne said. “In a western bridle he curves his neck.
