She earned a MD and doctorate from Virginia Polytechnic where she focused on nutrition and behavior, with projects on exercise physiology and reproduction. She has been a faculty member in equine studies at several colleges, currently at Wilson College where she teach- es nutrition, behavior, manage- ment, and exercise physiology. She has been riding for 35 years and grew up doing western, gymkhana, barrel racing, natural horseman- ship, hunter/jumper, driving, and, briefly in eventing. A for- mer therapeutic riding instruc- tor, she has trained through the Grand Prix, competed through Intermediare-1, started numer- ous horses and brought them up through the levels. Laura Kenny, MS Waste to Worth; Composting Horse Manure (Fri., 11 am, Seminar Hall B) Laura is an Equine Natural Resources Educator for Penn State Extension who works with horse farm owners and managers to improve pasture and manure man- agement, which benefits the horses and the environment. She received her BS from Rutgers University in Equine Science and worked for Rutgers Cooperative Extension for several years before starting a MS in Plant Biology, also at Rutgers. Holly Linz Dressage Tests for Working Equitation Explained (Thurs, 6 pm, Large Arena) Working Equitation; Obstacles for Ease of Handling Trial (Fri., noon, Equine Arena) Barn manager and head trainer Holly Linz insists that barn staff treat all boarded horses as though they were their own. Holly runs her own boarding facility and is an accomplished rider, trainer, and clinician. She has studied closely under Felicitas von Neuman Cosel and other national level Dressage and Working Equitation trainers and judges. She incorporates Classi- cal Dressage principles and natu- ral horsemanship in her training and rides with top trainers and judges in multiple disciplines. Dr. Erika Machtinger Reining in the Bugs; Keeping Horses Bug Bite Free (Fri., 3 pm, Seminar Hall B) Dr. Erika Machtinger holds a B.S. from the University of Delaware in Wildlife Conservation and Ecology, and a MSc and PhD in Entomology from the University of Florida. Her focus is biological control agents of filth flies affecting livestock and equine facilities, and integrated tick management. An Assistant Professor of Entomology at Penn State, she is also a Certi- fied Wildlife Biologist® who has been awarded over $2.9 million in research funding. As the principal investigator for the Veterinary En- tomology Laboratory, her research focuses on arthropod pests of veter- inary concern.
