Danielle Smarsh, PhD, PAS Managing Equine Parasites (Thurs., 1 pm, Fri., 10:05 am, Seminar Hall B) Danielle is an Assistant Professor of Equine Science and Equine Extension Specialist in the Department of Animal Science at Penn State who spent 4.5 years teaching in the Ani- mal Science Department at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. She received her BS in Animal Science from the Univer- sity of Delaware and her PhD in Equine Exercise Physiology from Rutgers University. Her equine research studied the effects of age and training on antioxidants and oxidative stress in Standardbreds. Visit Danielle Smarsh, PhD, PAS at the Penn State University booth 623, 624. Amy Snover & Lisa Witmer Draft Horses in Pennsylvania (Sat., 2 pm, Seminar Hall B) A graduate of Penn State in Biology, board certified, and practicing in emergency medicine, Amy drives and shows a Perche- ron hitch and is Secretary of the Pennsylvania Percheron Associ- ation. She has youth, World and Reserve Champions in cart, team, showmanship and judging and has promoted driving horsemanship skills programs for 4-H. Lisa, a 4-H Youth Development Educator with Penn State Extension, holds a bachelor’s degree in Animal Sci- ence from Rutgers University and an Associate’s degree in Equine Science and Management from Morrisville State College. She raises, trains, and shows Perche- rons with her family, and helps coordinate the PA Farm Show and Keystone International Livestock Expo draft horse shows. Stallion Avenue Demonstration (Thurs., 4 pm, Fri., 1 pm, Sat., 4 pm, Sun., 11 am, Equine Arena) Stallion Avenue features the region’s top stallions. A variety of breeds will be represented. Each stallion will be shown in the arena each day. The Parade of Breeds follows, featuring exciting and educational demonstrations of many different breeds, high- lighting the beauty and versatility of the horse. Joe Stanco Designing & Selecting Patterns & Courses (Fri., 6 pm, Seminar Hall B) Joe Stanco is a former 4-H Extension Educator from Wyo- ming County, PA, with almost 12 years of experience in Volunteer Management, Teen Leadership and Animal Science. He has also been an equine industry profes- sional and enthusiast. He is an AQHA L1 Judge and profes- sional horseman, youth horse judging team coach, clinician and an active riding instructor and trainer. Dr. Burt Staniar How GI Anatomy Influences How You Feed Your Horses (Sat., 11 am, Seminar Hall B) A faculty member in the Department of Dairy and Animal Sciences at Penn State, Dr. Staniar’s research focuses on how nutrition influences healthy growth and metabolism in horses. He is researching how different feeding management strategies impact metabolic health, skeletal development and growth, and gastrointestinal integrity in order to identify nu- tritional strategies to reduce the risk of health problems that are a serious concern to the equine industry including gastric ulcers, laminitis, and colic. United Liberty Horse Archers Equi-Tainment Performances Daily (Thurs., 2 pm, Fri., 2 pm, Sat., 5 pm, and Sun., 2 pm, Equine Arena) Ted Staudt competed in the World Horseback Archery Cham- pionships in Korea in 2017 and holds a degree from the Univer- sity of Findlay in Equine Studies & Equine Business Management. Jamie Landis has competed at various competitions nationwide and holds a certification from USAArchery as a level 2 Instruc- tor and a NHAA level 1 Mount- ed Archery Instructor. Kellie Andrews successfully organized the PA Open Mounted Archery Competition in 2015 to 2017 and is a NHAA level 2 Mounted Archery Instructor. Emily Urban Your Path to Going Pro (Sat., 4 pm, Seminar Hall B) Going Pro; Turn Your Riding Into Your Day Job (Sun., 10 am, Seminar Hall B) Emily founded The Rising Equestrian Pro (www.rising equestrianpro.com ), a platform to help young riders strategically prepare for a professional riding/ training career. She trained and rode for top Eventing and H/J pro- fessionals and developed her own horses and now runs a successful training and teaching business in Ithaca, NY, while also pursuing a PhD at Cornell University. Her experience working with top ex- ecutives in the private sector and venture capitalists has given her valuable business applications for the equestrian world.
