Page 10 March 2023 EAST COAST EQUESTRIAN Chloe Phillips-Harris has a diverse and experienced background when it comes to horses. She has ridden, trained and competed to 4* eventing for over 10 years including winning the New Zealand Young Rider series at 21. She has competed nationally in show jumping, dressage and in the hunter ring. These days Chloe runs a busy equestrian property in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand, producing sport horses and taming wild horses. As a young rider, she studied in Germany and worked under some of New Zealand’s best horsemen before going out on her own. With all her success in traditional English disciplines, Chloe is even better known for her adventures on horseback. She’s clocked over 3000km riding in Mongolia, including multiple appearances in the world’s toughest horse race The Mongol Derby. She has led and created some of the most remote and extreme animal-based expeditions in the world, including the Gobi Cold Camel Expedition, crossing 300km of the Gobi Desert on camels in temperatures down to -45c, The Great Nomad Expedition where she traveled 1200km using camels, yaks, horses and reindeer plus many more. Chloe has worked in Australia with camels as part of the Australia Desert Expeditions team doing a scientific survey in the Simpson Desert. Chloe’s best-selling 2018 book, “Fearless” outlines her life story with horses. In New Zealand, Chloe has worked with and tamed hundreds of wild horses, working mostly with stallions and those hardest to adopt. She developed a program called The Wild Horse Masterclass to help people improve their understanding of horse behavior and guide them through the steps of taming a horse. She runs workshops and clinics, presenting taming methods for wild horses as well as for eventing and jumpers. Her focus is on both riding skills and horsemanship. She excels at helping riders improve their understanding of horses and getting better performance-based results. Chloe’s specialty is understanding horse behavior and creating a partnership between horse and rider, whether that be the first steps of taming a wild horse or fine-tuning the skills needed for an advanced ride. These horses are to be available for adoption at the start of the event. Each horse, trainer and rescue began this multilevel competition in December. The journey from rescued to stardom began as trainers, selected by each rescue, worked with their horse to take them from unbroke to riding. Each rescue has documented their horse’s progress via social media, live feeds, open house clinics and other media outlets. At the end of this 3-month long journey the horses will appear at Horse World Expo. Each horse will present an in-hand freestyle and an under-saddle freestyle. At the end of the event the ultimate winner will be each rescued horse, who will be a step closer to finding a new adoptive home. The rescues will be competing for cash and prizes as well. He has combined his experiences and successes in all of these dis- ciplines, as well as a constant intense study of the Classical Masters, in order to develop his skills as a horseman and teacher. Brendan has had the honor of studying under many of the greatest mentors and teachers of our time; including having two of America’s greatest horsemen, John and Josh Lyons, give him his start as a young clinician. Brendan always says that he owes much of his ability as a teacher and communicator to spending years with John and Josh Lyons. It is his hope that he may bring a refreshing and much needed breath of air to the training of high level horses, with a commitment to putting the horse first. Engaged in modern competitions and teaching modern horses, it is the proven work of the Classical masters that guides what Brendan teaches from beginning to end, always striving to learn more with each ride.
