Page 6 March 2022 EAST COAST EQUESTRIAN Legendary Horseman, Rancher and Cowboy, Craig Cameron is one of the original clinicians. A true Texan, Mr. Cameron has taught his Horsemanship way of life all over the World for more than three decades! Road to the Horse Colt Starting World Champion, RFDTV Star and Hall of Fame Cowboy, Craig Cameron says he is honored to be back at the Horse World Expo! Craig grew up watching the rough and tumble methods of horse breaking and training in the 1950’s and 60’s and never did believe or cotton to the unnecessary rough treatment these horses received. At the ranch Craig took on problem horses from local ranchers and used a slower, more natural approach that seemed to work. Clients would get their horses back and be puzzled by the incredible transition that had taken place in such a short time. People wanted to come watch the magic at work. Craig said, “When I started making them pay, they really started listening.” Craig then heard about a man named Ray Hunt who advocated working with the horse and not against him. Craig followed in Ray Hunt’s trail and became one of the “original clini- cians,” filming his first video in 1985. Now Craig performs his magic to horse enthusiasts all over the world where he travels almost 90,000 miles and 44 weeks a year. Craig, called the Public Defender of the horse, also hosts two silver “Telly” TV shows, “Ride Smart” and “The Extreme Cowboy Race” on RFDTV, which have brought him even more notoriety. Craig Cameron keeps the cowboy way alive and well each day. Although he is most noted for his innovative horsemanship skills and exciting teaching techniques, he is also an incredible woodsman and hunter. Craig has received many awards, American Cowboy Culture Award for theWorking Cowboy, Western Equestrian Award, and was recently honored by being adopted by the Crow Indian Nation and given the name “Captures Many Horses” for his work with the Crow Indians in Montana. If you know Craig, you know his sense of humor and his trademark laugh that he is well known for at all his clinics, at the ranch and on the road. But the road in many ways seems to still be home to Craig. After years of rodeo and decades of horsemanship clinics on the road, he is still going strong at an age where most men are riding the rocking chair. He still starts hundreds of colts and teaches hundreds of classes each year coast to coast and nation to nation. Craig Cameron may have grown up dreaming of being a cowboy but with his induction into the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame in 2007, people will now always say, “He did not just dream it, he lived it.” Ride, Ride, Ride; Exercises for a More Responsive Horse (Thurs. 3 pm, Equine Arena) Horsemanship is Not a Method, It’s a Way of Life; a Q&A Session (Thurs., 5 pm, Seminar Hall A) Mind, Body & Spirit; Q&A with Hall of Famer Craig Cameron (Fri., 2 pm, Seminar Hall A) Techniques to Develop Great Stops, Backs & Spins (Fri., 5 pm, Equine Arena) Keep on Riding; Exercises & Patterns for Braver Horses (Sat., 3 pm, Large Arena) Never Weaken! Her powerful and humane behavioral training techniques are an eye-opening experience for equine professionals, competitors, and amateurs alike. She has produced books and videos, podcasts and traveled worldwide to teach the concepts of systematic positive reinforcement training for horses, including the use of the clicker/bridge signal. Shawna began her training career far outside the equestrian world, working with large marine mammals. Animals such as dolphins, sea lions and orcas cannot be coerced. Only positive reinforcement methods can be used to ask these magnificent creatures to participate voluntarily in activities with human trainers. (You may be able to force a horse onto a trailer, but just try it with a walrus!) When introduced to the world of top equestrian competition, Shawna saw immediately how reward-based training could be used to engage the horse’s willingness in equestrian pursuits. A number of years ago, top trainer John Madden was so impressed with Shawna’s early results that the world- renowned training facility at theMadden farmbecame the testing ground for adapting positive reinforcement training for horses. By using Shawna’s positive reinforcement training methods, Olympian Beezie Madden taught her famous show jumper Judgment (now Judgment ISF) to overcome his fear of water and go on to win the $1,000,000 CN International at Spruce Meadows, among many other international show-jumping victories. Beezie’s spectacular success over decades as a top international competitor on a series of great horses is a testament not only to her extraordinary talent and skill as a rider and trainer, but also in part to the reward-based training system that Shawna first developed on the Madden farm. Shawna has worked with numerous Olympians and international competitors in show jumping, dressage, eventing and driving. Shawna’s infectious enthusiasm, sense of humor, years of training experience and rap- port with animals and humans makes her one of the finest positive-reinforcement trainers in the world.
