Page 8 March 2020 EAST COAST EQUESTRIAN Tik Maynard began riding with the Vancou- ver Pony Club, in Southlands, British Columbia. After achieving his ‘A’ rating, he began compet- ing in Modern Pentathlon, where he represented Canada at three World Championships and the 2007 Pan-American Games. In 2008, Maynard began a journey to improve his riding. From Germany to Florida, from Alberta to Texas, and from Florida to New Jersey, Maynard was willing to go wherever he had to, to learn from the best. Along the way he discovered something more important: horsemanship. It is that idea that continues to motivate him. Today, Maynard searches out knowledge from many sources, but his most im- portant mentors are his parents and his wife. His work combines 3-Day Eventing and Horsemanship. He is married to US Eventing Team Member Sinead Halpin-Maynard. Together they run Copperline Farm in Citra, Florida. Maynard has always been a pas- sionate book lover. He has written a children’s story, published by REAL magazine, has won the Malahat Review Open Season Award, and has twice been shortlisted for the CBC Literary Awards for his non–fiction works. The newest event at Horse World Expo features 501c3 horse rescues in and around the Mid-At- lantic region presenting horses unbroke to saddle and bridle, at least 3 years of age, of any breed of horse, pony or mule, to be trained in any riding discipline. All will be available for adoption at the start of the event. Each horse, trainer and rescue will compete in a multilevel competition that started on November 26 with the final competitions to be held live at Horse World Expo. Since November 26, trainers selected by each rescue have worked with their horse to take them from unbroke to riding. Each rescue has documented their horses’ progress via social media, live feeds, open house clinics and other media outlets. Folks have followed the journey and will have a chance to vote online for their favorite horse on the Rescued to Stardom Facebook page as part of the competitors' final score. At Horse World Expo, each will present an in-hand freestyle and an under-saddle freestyle. At the end of the event the ultimate winner will be each rescued horse, who will be a step closer to finding a new adoptive home. The rescues will be competing for cash and prizes as well.
