Laura Kenny, MS Sugar in Forages & the Links to Laminitis (Fri., 3 pm, Seminar Hall B) Laura is an Equine Natural Resources Educator for Penn State Extension who works with horse farm owners and managers to improve pasture and manure management, which benefits the horses and the environment. She received her BS from Rutgers University in Equine Science and worked for Rutgers Cooper- ative Extension for several years before starting a MS in Plant Biology, also at Rutgers. Melisa Klem Buying Your Dream Farm (Sun., 11 am, Seminar Hall B) Melisa worked for a local Grand Prix dressage trainer and competed throughout the Mid-At- lantic region, including both the CBLM and USDF Regional Championships on several differ- ent horses. In 2010, she and her husband, searching for a farm of their own, became frustrated by the lack of knowledge realtors had regarding turnkey equestrian farms. She left a career in the non-profit sector for a new path in real estate. At Hagan Realty she quickly became one of Mary- land’s premiere equestrian agents and built a successful team, The Homestead Group, whose agents are all life-long equestrians. Andrea Kocher, MPS Opportunities in the Penn 4-H Horse Program (Fri., 4 pm, Seminar Hall B) Andrea is an Equine Extension Specialist and Instructor of Equine Science in the Department of Ani- mal Science at Penn State Univer- sity. She works closely with youth extension programs, supporting the PA 4-H Horse Program through curriculum development and program implementation. She also develops state 4-H horse curricula and reference materials and assists with development and coordination of educational programs, horse shows, judging contests, clinics, and seminars. Dr. Erica Machtinger Farm Fly & Tick Control; Myths, Mysteries & Methods (Fri., 1 pm, Seminar Hall B) Dr. Erica Machtinger holds a B.S. from the University of Delaware inWildlife Conservation and Ecology and a MSc and PhD in Entomology from the University of Florida. She has focused on study- ing biological control agents of filth flies affecting livestock and equine facilities, and integrated tick man- agement. AnAssistant Professor of Entomology at Penn State and a CertifiedWildlife Biologist® with 33 scientific publications in print or review, she is the principal investi- gator for the Veterinary Entomology Laboratory. Her research focuses on arthropod pests of veterinary con- cern. Erika has competed through the intermediate level in eventing and is a USDF silver medalist. Helene McKernen Permanent Horse ID; Microchipping (Fri., 2 pm, Seminar Hall B) Helene trained in open jump- ing and cross country at the Fort Sam Houston Equestrian Olympic Training Center. Now retired, as an Equine Research Associate at Penn State, she did educational presenta- tions and research on the National Equine Identification System, the Chesapeake Bay Nutrient and Sediment Management Study, the Equine Environmental Stewardship Program and Environmentally Friendly Farm Program, coordinat- ed equine programs and conducted workshops and presentations for youth and adults.
