Renegade River Wins the 2023 Willowdale Steeplechase (Continued from page 27) Cup he was also in the winners’ circle for the first race of the day, the Liam Magee Apprentice Rider Hurdle race. Here he was riding another Leslie Young trained horse - Booby Trap, the entry of Thomas Rice and Ashwell Stable LLC. He finished the day as the winner of the $10,000 Marshall W. Jenney Memorial Foxhunter’s Chase, a timber allowance for non-winners of a stakes race in 2022-23. EHB Racing’s Huyana, ridden by Virgin- ia Korrell for Adair Stifel, led the race until the approach to the final fence. That’s when Nancy Reed’s Awesome Adrian got into gear under Tierney, driving to the wire 3 1/2 lengths in front. Kathy Neilson trained the winner. Leslie Young’s two wins earned her the Gail and Dixon Thayer Winning Trainer Perpet- ual Trophy for the second year in a row. She has 19 wins in the 2023 season. Two Firsts Jockey Virginia Korrell also got her first win over hurdles at Willowdale in the day’s second race -The Folly, a $15,000 maiden claiming hurdle. Thomond Park, owned by Del Rio Racing LLC and trained by Ricky Hendriks, was not a factor in the race until a surpris- ing show of speed in the home stretch that went from jumping with the pack to the win by 2 ¾ lengths. It was the first steeplechase victory for Thomond Park, who spent five years running on the flat with occasional jump races. Hicko- ry Made Stables and Celtic Venture Stable’s Eye of Gunfighter, with Mark Galligan, ran well to outduel Greylover for the place spot. Also on the card was the Landhope Cup, a $15,000 3-mile Maiden Timber Race, won by To Be or Not To Be, owned by Irvin Crawford II, trained by Joseph Davies and ridden by Eric Poretz. To Be or Not To Be went wire to wire, taking the 14th fence badly, but Poretz skillfully was able to hold on and draw clear again, winning by 1 3/4 lengths over Adlestrop Hill’s Paddy’s Crown. Paddy’s Crown and jockey Zach Miller encountered and overcame problems of their own including a slipped saddle and lost stirrup. Manure Removal kevin.bomgardner@aol.com
