EquineColicReliefUSA.com • Email: zebecash2@hotmail.com By Tod Marks, National Steeplechase Foundation The temps in Delaware barely made it to 50 degrees on Mother’s Day, May 8, but it was dry for the 44th running of the Winterthur Point to Point. Highlighting the four-race card, three over timber and a training flat event, was the $25,000 Winterthur Bowl allow- ance for non-winners of two. Taking command in the feature from start to finish was Irv Naylor's Withoutmoreado, who broke his maiden at Genesee Valley last fall, and had hit the board in four of five races leading up to Sunday’s score. With Skylar McKenna riding for her mom, trainer Kathy Neilson, Without- moreado controlled the race, rallied on the downhill run to the final turn, and extended his lead to 11 lengths after the long uphill grind to the wire. For McKenna, coming off a highly successful 2021 when she lost her apprentice bug, it was her first victory of the NSA Spring season. She would go on to win the day's finale, a train- ing-flat contest, with Meadow Run Farm's Glencorrib Sky, also for Neilson. After an eight-race career in claimers on the flat at Laurel, Junior Senator, a six-year-old Maryland-bred son of Smarty Jones, made the move to jump racing in 2020, but managed only two starts in two seasons for owner Irv Naylor and trainer Cyril Murphy. In his first race in a year, Junior Senator, with Eric Poretz aboard, broke his maiden in style, leading from beginning to end, 30 lengths in front of the runner-up, Armata Stable's Chosen Mate. Only two horses went to the post in the race for amateur/ apprentice riders, and it was a spirited battle from beginning to end between Ballybristol Farm's 11-year-old Mercoeur and Charlie Fenwick's Royal Ruse. But at the finish it was Mercoeur who used his con- trolling speed to maintain a slight advantage throughout. Ridden by Freddie Procter for trainer Leslie Young, Mercoeur repelled a late bid by his foe, ridden by Skylar McKenna, to post a length victory. For Procter, it was his second vic- tory of the weekend, giving him six in 11 NSAmounts since his debut at Cheshire in late March. Overall, Keri Brion and Leslie Young lead the trainer standings with 13 wins apiece, with Brion holding a marginal $5,000 edge in the earnings. Parker Hendriks has 12 victories to Procter’s six. After a two-win day in Virginia, Tom Garner has five victories, which ties him with Graham Watters. Owners Irv and Diane Naylor are on a bit of a tear, too. The have vaulted into the top spot in earnings, with $153,050 vs. $97,300 for Armata Stable. Since April 30, the Naylors have five victories, including two stakes scores, in the Daniel Van Clief Memorial and Queen’s Cup. Withoutmoreado Wins Winterthur Bowl by 11 Lengths
