Last year, 87 foals were sold, with seven being buybacks.Abuyback’s “buyer” is paying to name the foal and to help sponsor future pony care. In 2024, the average price of a take home foal was $3,795 with the lowest selling foal going for $1,600 and the highest selling foal going for $8,500. The highest buyback foal was a record-setting $50,000 and the lowest selling buyback foal sold for $15,000. Between foal sales, the fire company sometimes auctions off unique items. Denise Bowden wanted to share one of those items with you. “We are doing something really special,” she said. “We had a custom-made fireman’s jacket done. It’s the only one ever made, and it’s based on the jackets we wear, but it’s black and has the 100th Anniversary logo on it.” A past carnival chairman, Denise says they could not do this without the volunteers. “Between the carnival, the food stands, the roundup, the swim, the auction and everything else, I’d say we have about 200 to 225 volunteers ever year,” she said. “I’m so grateful for our amazing community volunteers. They always show up for us!” While pony-buyers are loading up their foals to go home on Friday morning, there is one exciting activity happening – the swim home. On Friday morning, the north bands go home by trailer, but the cowboys herd the south bands down the streets to Pony Swim Lane, where they trot into the water with wild abandon, heading back to their beloved island home. “There’s something about those ponies that captures everyone’s heart, and once they capture your heart, they never let go,” Bowden said. Talking about the ponies brings tears to her eyes. “People come back year after year. These are some of the most majestic animals God ever put on earth. How blessed we are to have them right here in our own back yard.” Editor’s Note: In the expanded second edition of Lois Szymanski’s book “Out of the Sea: Today’s Chincoteague Pony” readers will find just about everything they ever wanted to know about the Chincoteague Ponies including their history, what they are doing in the world today, and how to navigate the events of Pony Penning.
