By Sylvia Sidesaddle Well hello again darlings! Syl is refreshed after her long va- cation and ready to scoop. AND, looking forward to Horse World Expo next month! On to the news. The Horse reports that more than 75 percent of horses in Pennsylvania have been exposed to the bacteria that causes Lyme disease. Yikes darlings! PADepartment of Agriculture researchers studied 271 horses, 77.1 percent of which had been exposed. Lyme disease can cause fever and laminitis but may be hard to diagnose as additional symptoms often mimic other diseases, so always suspect, sweet things! More graduates of the USDF L Education have been announced. New Jersey residents Eliza Banks, Nicole DelGiorno, Eileen Keller , and Maggie O’Leary ; PA residents Nina Catanzarite, Lisa Hall, Cara Klothe , and Paula Oliver ; and Maryland resident Shera Solomon are all on their way to becoming USEF/USDF 'r' Licensed Dressage judges. Congratulations grads! Emerging eventers under age 25 were in Ocala in mid-January for a USEF training session with coach Leslie Law . The locals include Amanda Beale (Malvern, Pa.), Alexa Gartenberg (Gladwyne, Pa.) and Meg Pellegrini (Wayne, Pa.). Meanwhile, the USEF has named participants in the Pre-Elite Program, who are all locals: Buck Davidson (Unionville, Pa.) and Carlevo, Phillip Dutton (West Grove, Pa.) and Sea of Clouds, and Boyd Martin (Cochranville, Pa.) and Tsetserleg TSF. Go team! Congratulations to Hannah Fisher , Berwyn, Pa., a C-3 Event- ing member of Radnor Hunt Pony Club, who was awarded the US Pony Club’s $1,000 Triple Crown Nutrition scholarship. This is not Hannah’s first trip to the podi- um – in 2019 she won the Margo Leithead Cornerstone Award for Excellence in Horse Management and was named to the Bronze Medal Club in the USPC/USEA Eventing Recognition Awards. Well done Hannah! The Pennsylvania Hunt Cup had a good year in 2022, donating $75,000 to the Chester County Food Bank. But wait! There’s more! They also donated to the River Hills Fox- hounds (whose members are outrid- ers for race day), Upland Country Day School (who sang the National Anthem), Temple Gwathmey Stee- plechase Foundation, Work To Ride, and Coatesville Youth Initiative. The 2023 USEF Horsemas- tership Training Series was held in January for athletes aged 16-21. Among the riders were locals Emma Blumenkrantz (Colts Neck, N.J.) and Audrey Schulze (Saddle River, N.J.). The series is designed to identify and develop the next generation of top U.S. Jumping team athletes and includes mounted and unmounted sessions with top professionals, including New Jersey’s Anne Kursinski.
