Know what your insur- ance policy covers before you need to make a claim. Here are some of the typical areas that a standard homeowners policy may not provide you with the coverage you need: (1) barns and out-buildings should be insured at their replacement cost value, (2) farm equipment, tools, and tack should be scheduled, (3) liability should cover you for your horses both on your property and off (while at shows, trail riding, vet clinic), and (4) if you are running an equine business (boarding, training, lessons, clinics, shows), the liability should extend (rather than having to find a different policy). Many policies will exclude coverage on a building used in a Make Sure Your Barn is Adequately Insured business so if you decide to board or give lessons or train, be sure to talk to your insurance agent be- forehand.
