Syl hopes it is a peaceful and successful decade for all. She sends a special shout out to all her darlings who called or wrote, missing their Jan- uary issue of East Coast Eques- trian . There wasn’t one! Steph (Syl’s editor), now an aged mare, decided she and her staff de- served a break with not too much work over the holidays. Fear not, darlings…the staff is back with a vengeance and ready to bring you all the scoop. It’s awards season again, dar- lings, and locals got their share. Phillip Dutton’s mount Z, owned by Annie Jones, Tom Tierney, Simon Roosevelt, Suzanne Lacey and Caroline Moran , was named the US Eventing Association’s Horse of the Year. PVF Peace of Mind, who was competed in combined driving by Suzy Stafford , was inducted into the American Morgan Horse Association Show Horse Hall of Fame. The USEF award winners included US Para-Equestrian As- sociation director Hope Hand of Newtown Square, PA, who won the Pegasus Medal of Honor and Lehigh Valley, PAMorgan trainer Mike Goebig who won the C.J. ‘June’ Cronan Trophy—for the second time! Boyd Martin and Beezie Madden shared the Wil- liam Steinkraus trophy. Congratu- lations to all! Valerie Ormond , Bowie, MD, the author of Believing In Horses and Believing In Horses, Too , won the Military Writer’s So- ciety of America President’s Award for 2019. And, the Equus Film and Arts Festival awarded Believing in Horses, Too the Winnie Award for Best Veteran Fiction. Ormond, a 25-year Navy veteran from a family of veterans, used those experiences to write the fictional Believing In Horses, Too about a young girl in a military family who matures through her experiences with horses, people, and equine therapy. Congratulations! Congratulations to Taylor Hudson , Fairview, PA, who was nominated by the American Morgan Horse Association for the US Equestrian Youth Sportsman Award. A National Honor Soci- ety scholar and varsity athlete, Taylor is also a regional AMHA Youth Council delegate, and winner of the 2019 AMHAYouth of the Year Finals at the Grand National & World Championship Morgan Horse Show. Iron Spring Farm's Sir Sinclair, Keur, was the USEF #1 Sire of Dressage Horses for an extraordinary fifth consecutive year. Sir's offspring earned more than 9,8000 points in dressage competitions in 2019, more than 4,000 points ahead of the second place stallion, Contango, Preferent, who also stood at Iron Spring. Sir has 74 point-earning sons and daughters, including 23 offspring competing at FEI, with six at Grand Prix. Rounding out the remarkable year for the Iron Spring stallions, UB40, Keur, finished third among nearly 800 ranked dressage sires in 2019. But that’s not all the Iron Spring Farm news darlings. Mary Alice (Dorrance) Malone , ISF’s owner, was named to Forbes’ 34th annual ranking of the world’s bil- lionaires. She placed 239th on the list and is the wealthiest person in the Philadelphia area with a net worth of just over $3.5 billion. In addition to her ISF duties, Malone is the largest shareholder of the Campbell Soup Company, where she sits on the board along with her brother, Bennett Dorrance . Her grandfather, a chemist and nephew of Campbell Soup’s founder, invented condensed soup in 1897, but of course you knew that, you sweet things. Syl’s prayers are with Kaily Giancola’s family and friends. The budding eventer, who worked for Laura Welsh in West Grove, PA and traveled with her to Ocala, FL, has been in a coma since December when she was found unconscious after leaving the arena to cool out her horse. Kaily, 25, was wearing a helmet and it appears the trauma came not merely from a fall but also from blunt force typical of a kick. At press time she was showing hopeful signs including movement and brain wave activity and a Go Fund Me page to help with her medical bills had received over $45,000 in donations. The Tokyo Olympics are coming up this year and the eventing training lists are out, with numerous locals on the roster. The Elite list contains just two combinations-- Phillip Dut- ton , West Grove, PA and Z and Boyd Martin , Cochranville, PA with Tsetserleg. On the pre-elite list are Jennie Brannigan (West Grove, Pa.) and Stella Artois; Boyd with Long Island T and On Cue; Marilyn Little (Frederick, Md.) and RF Scandalous; and Erin Sylvester (Cochranville, Pa.) and Paddy The Caddy. Fi- nally, Caitlin Silliman (Cochran- ville, Pa.) has been named to the Development Training List. Syl’s darlings who don’t regularly visit the area will note that West Grove (population 2,843) and Cochranville (population 668) are disproportionately represented in the Olympic training lists despite being tiny villages with little more than a sign, a post office and, nearby, one of the world’s great veterinary clinics. Congratulations to Brooke Leininger , PA and Stephanie Ormston and Jennifer Brown of MD, who are recent graduates of the US Dressage Federation L Education program. The program prepares candidates to enter the USEF/USDF Recorded (‘r’) Dressage Judge Training Pro- gram, to judge schooling shows, and to provide greater insight into judging dressage. And that’s it for Syl for anoth- er month! Until next time, remem- ber to S.S.S. (Send Syl Scoop) at PAEquest@aol.com . And…be careful where you step!
