(Continued from page 20) Four new national champi- ons emerged at the 2021 USEF Endurance National Champi- onships for CEIYJI1*, CEI1*, CEIYJ2*, and CEI2* divisions, held at Broxton Bridge, SC on November 12 and 13, 2021. 2021 USEF CEI1* National Championship Geneva Soule (Frenchtown, N.J.) and Meg Sleeper’s 2011 Arabian mare, Syrocco Madrigal, took the champion title in the CEI1* division. “Maddie” is a seasoned competitor, with 1530 endurance miles completed over her six-year career. It was Soule’s first time out at the event. “I started competing in FEI rides last year with Meg’s horses, and this was my first National Championship ride,” said Soule. Soule has gotten to know Maddie well as one of her care- takers at home. “I hadn’t actually ridden Maddie in about two years, but I’ve helped care for her as the manager of Meg Sleeper’s Good- wink Farm,” said Soule. “Maddie is a great mare and is very easy going around the farm.” The Reserve title for went to Jose Ortega (Miami, Fla.) and Nazeefs Flashy Rose, a 2007 Arabian mare. Local Riders Win National Endurance Championships 2021 USEF CEIYJ2* National Championship Charly Dugan (Muncy, Pa.) and her 2012 Arabian gelding, Southern Justice, won the CEIYJ2* division. In September, Dugan and “Roo” competed as part of the U.S. Endurance Team at the 2021 FEI Endurance World Championship for Young Riders in Ermelo, The Netherlands, in September. Roo is a former show horse re-trained for endurance by Du- gan’s mom, Sally Jellison. Dugan took over the ride last year in the lead up to the World Champion- ship. Dugan and Jellison were able to ride together for part of the course at Broxton Bridge, which Dugan cites as a highlight of the weekend. “Roo can be a spook monster, but he’s always well intentioned and he’s very sweet,” said Dugan. “When competing, he puts his big boy pants on and is all business. The first loop is always a struggle, but after that it’s smooth sailing. “Looking ahead to 2022, I have several goals for Roo,” said Dugan. “They are completing his first 3*, getting most of my rides with him to get my Elite Status, and continuing to spend time in the ring with him to work on equitation.” By Sylvia Sidesaddle Well, hello again darlings! Syl apologizes for her intermit- tent appearance in her darlings’ mailboxes. She’s here! She’s gone! She’s back! Let’s enjoy our time together and get right to the scoop. First, some East Coast Equestrian personnel news. Con- tributor Amy Worden , a very accomplished journalist, will be too busy at her new job as editor of PennLive.com, the online arm of the Harrisburg Patriot News, to submit articles. She will be greatly missed. And junior con- tributor Haylie Kerstetter was honored with a $1,000 Travel Award from American Horse Publications to attend their conference in Texas this fall. Haylie is a senior at Centenary University who majors in Equine Studies, Communication for the Equine Industry, and Social Media Marketing. The Pennsylvania Hunt Cup had a special visitor this year. America’s latest 5 Star champi- ons, Boyd Martin and On Cue, made an appearance, unmount- ed and sans tack, to bask in the glow of hometown love. Boyd’s farm, Windurra, recent- ly welcomed back Remington XXV, Boyd’s former five-star horse who was his reserve horse for the 2010 World Equestrian Games and the 2012 Olympics. Now, older and wiser, he’s teach- ing Boyd’s older son, Nox, the horsemanship basics. Lucky boy darlings! No nasty devil pony for him! Congratulations to US Dres- sage Federation newly minted Training First Level Certified Instructor, Weronica Polanco , of New Jersey. The USDF Instruc- tor/Trainer Program is designed to set a standard of excellence in dressage training and instruction in the United States, and to edu- cate dressage riders, instructors, and aspiring instructors. But of course you knew that, you sweet things! Syl’s darlings will remem- ber Icabad Crane, the Graham Motion trained racehorse who moved on to an eventing career with Phillip Dutton . Icabad won the Retired Racehorse Project’s Thoroughbred Makeover’s “Most Wanted Thoroughbred” in 2014. He then evented through the two-star level with Phillip before moving on to event with Phillip’s daughter, Olivia. After breaking a bone in his hind leg, he became wife Edie’s mount. Now Icabad is back at the track, working as a pony horse at Fair Hill Training Center. What a resume! Well done Icabad! Two local rescues have received cash awards from the EQUUS Foundation. Ome- ga Horse Rescue in Airville, PA, received the Emma and Georgina Bloomberg Horse Whisperer Award and Days End Farm Horse Rescue, Lisbon, MD received the Jackson Family Horse Whisperer Award. EQUUS Foundation Horse Whisperers are a select group of individuals and organizations who are committed to ensuring that America's horses are safe and live with dignity throughout their lives. They are recognized by the EQUUS Foundation for their extraordinary kinship with horses by the establishment of an award in their names to honor deserving equine charities. Con- gratulations all! Syl’s darlings who have a horse or pony that no longer fits their needs have a new option for rehoming it. Soft Landings is a new online platform where therapeutic riding organizations advertise their need for horses to use in their programs. A less populated section is for col- leges and universities looking for competition horses for their Interscholastic Equestrian Asso- ciation Hunt Seat, Western and Dressage teams Check them out at equusfoundation.org, look for next chapter. Syl’s darlings will remem- ber Kevin Babington , the Irish Olympic show jumper formerly from Gwynedd Valley, PA, who suffered a paralyzing injury on (Continued on page 9)
