FARMS HORSES MISC. girlfriend and we’ve been dating for almost a year. She’s pretty, smart, has a great job—bottom line, she checks all the boxes. But the horses! She buys them the most expensive apples. She has a person who routinely goes to the barn and massages her horses. She rides several times a week and competes often. The competi- tions are amazing and I love shar- ing pictures of the horse shows on my social media pages. My old friends are totally jealous. This lady is independent, and doesn’t like to hear my questions about why she would spend so much money and time on these crea- tures. I don’t particularly enjoy going to the barn with her, and find her sessions with her horses pretty boring. We’re both athlet- ic—her as an equestrian and I do a lot of running and I play golf a few times a week. It would be wonderful if she’d consider play- ing golf with me. I think she’d be great at it! As the holiday season approaches, I’m wondering if I should raise the issues with her about how her horse hobby gets in the way of my taking the next step with her. She is beautiful, and I think we would be a perfect couple. During the holidays, I would love to talk to her about maybe moving in together. How do you think I should approach the topic of how she might focus more on us and less on her (no offense) smelly horses? -Looking for Love Dear Looking… Wow! I love the idea of peo- ple getting together—especially good-looking, smart, independent people with great jobs. Imagine the offspring! Your “potential” girlfriend sounds amazing! You? Not so much. Where to begin… what, exactly, attracted you to this beautiful woman? Her beauti- ful-ness? Her “independence”? Is that a code word for well off? Or was it how hot she looks when competing? Your social media friends are jealous, but are you just pimping pictures of this woman to cultivate jealousy and admiration for yourself? I feel weird having to explain basic relationship advice, but here goes: people who are interested in genuine, mutual, long-term rela- tionships don’t normally focus on how to persuade potential mates to ditch the things they care about and develop entirely new hobbies/ sports/interests. Instead they try to learn more about the passions of the people to whom they’re attracted. She loves horses. Have you asked her about what it is that she loves about them? Don’t say they’re smelly. They smell like horses, not Old Spice commer- cials. How long has she been involved with horses? How old are her horses and how long have they been with her? Then, as you and this potential girlfriend get to know each other, perhaps you might talk about your passions. Golf? Fitness? You find her love of horses boring and stinky. What does she think about golf? What I’m searching for in your question is a generous heart. You say that she “checks all the boxes.” Kind of like a new car, right? It’s a pretty cold and unfor- giving list. Exactly what do you do? And would you be thrilled to be described as “checking all the boxes,” especially since not one of those boxes was an attribute like kindness, compassion, generosity, a sense of humor, etc. You might be better served by taking the spirit of the holiday season and figuring out who you are and what you might bring to a relationship that—to be successful and mutually fulfill- ing—demands a level playing field. People are not objects for you to own and display. They’re com- plicated and often unpredictable. My advice to you is to get over yourself, learn that women are not objects, and that independence in a woman is a beautiful thing. Have a question for Mal? Email her at PAEquest@aol. com. Go ahead...
