He was the official farrier of the Devon Horse Show for 30 years, the Pennsylvania National Horse show for 35 years and the Children’s Benefit Horse Show, Quentin Riding Club Horse Shows, Branchville Sussex Coun- ty Horse Show, Lancaster Horse Show and Twin Brooks Riding Club Horse Shows, where he was a former president. “Larry was my teacher, my mentor, and most of all my friend. Everything I achieved I owe to him,” said fellow farrier Joe Alfano. “We were a lifelong team, but it was always Larry’s shop and he was always the top man. We worked the biggest shows: Devon, Harrisburg, and others. We shod World Champi- ons and Olympic horses and we did it together.” Son of the late Mildred (Kelso) and Kenneth E. Bender. Larry married his teenage sweet- heart, Beverly Jean (Clouser) Bender, in 1964. He is survived by two sisters, Tamara (Bend- er) Foltz and Marleen (Bender) Steele, several cousins, nieces, nephew, grandnieces and grand- nephews. Larry took great pride in watching his wife show her American Saddlebred horses, CH Rip City, WC Santana Sage, and Anacacho Mayday and her Mor- gan horses, WC UNH Cameo, UNH Faraday, futurity champi- ons Tea and Honey and Hickory Lane Pride and thoroughbred Shawano.
