EAST COAST EQUESTRIAN April 2022 Page 19 We don’t like to think about it but it is important to consider insuring your horse. This is not only a way to protect your finan- cial investment in your horse, but it is also a way to protect your horse in the event of an accident or sickness. Mortality insurance pro- vides coverage on the life of the horse and includes theft and some colic surgery coverage. These policies are fairly stan- dard throughout the insurance industry. The differences in these pol- icies are in the medical options that cover required treatments and surgeries. You can purchase major medical endorsements or surgical-/colic-only endorse- ments. For some horses, you may want to consider loss of use (in the event a horse is injured and can no longer perform his intended use) or fertility cover- age. Another policy to consider is liability coverage. If your horse hurts someone or damages their property do you have protection Daily Dose Equine® makes health food for horses. Higher levels of Copper and Zinc are included to counter the effects of iron-rich soils and inspire metabolism. Daily Dose Equine™ LLC feeds are not pelleted; pellets, which are composed primarily of wheat, have been linked to digestive and other health issues and hide the feed ingredients. The whole grains and other ingredients are easy to see just as they are. Not hidden inside pellets. Products are available na- tionally through Chewy. If you board your horse at another facility, you have a lia- bility exposure. Your horse could kick another horse or get out on the road. The injured party will most likely name you in a claim, as owner of the horse, along with the boarding facility; and you will need to defend yourself. How much time will it take and what is your attorney’s hourly fee? The cost of this policy is equal to about one hour of your attorney’s time. As a horse owner you have a lot of responsibility – protecting your horse and yourself.
