EAST COAST EQUESTRIAN April 2020 Page 23 Special Advertising Section Clinics, Shows, Camps and Events The Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) is a national or- ganization for riders in grades 4-12 who ride Hunt Seat, Western and Dressage using a draw-based (catch ride) form of competition. The unique aspect of the IEAcompeti- tions, both at the local and national level, is that horse ownership is not required. Horses and equipment are provided to each rider at every event by the host team. Since the horse is new to the rider, the scores are based upon horsemanship and equitation. The format levels the playing field while maintaining affordability for participants. Riders may compete in introductory, beginner, novice, intermediate and pen levels in Hunt Seat over fences and on the flat, Western Horsemanship and Reining, and Dressage Test and Dressage Seat Equitation. Riders not only compete for individual points, but also team points. The format adds team camaraderie to a normally individual sport. Competing this way allows for serious athletes to not only prepare for a collegiate future in equestrian sports, but also the opportunity for scholarships. Starting an IEA team re- quires three members and an IEA coach. Each team must have ac- cess to an equine facility whether in a private or public school or at a local barn. The coaches and facilities must provide proof of insurance and all must submit applications and annual dues. Together, and with the assis- tance of thousands of equestrians, parents, coaches, families, friends, and sponsors, the IEA has grown into the largest youth equestri- an organization in the country with more than 14,500 members coaching and riding on 1,550 teams across 46 states. Competi- tion season runs September – June (depending upon discipline). Membership for the 2020- 2021 season will open June 1, 2020. Visit www.rideiea.org for more information.
