Lost and Found Horse Rescue Has Saved Hundreds of Horses

Lost and Found Horse Rescue (L&FHRF) strives to find nurturing homes for every horse, pony, mule or donkey that comes into contact with the program, relying on donations of financial assistance, materials, foster care and expertise in rehabilitation. Since 1997 when it became a non-profit organization, Lost & Found has successfully placed more than 500 equines, including many breeds of horse, ponies, mules and donkeys. Not all of the program’s horses are victims of abuse and neglect, or aged and unhealthy. Many animals are donated to the Rescue by owners no longer able to provide appropriate care for their animals and who want them to have a good home.

Horses that arrive at the Rescue are evaluated to determine what special care they may require and their optimal use. The staff and volunteers, incorporating the help of local and nationally recognized trainers, provide minor rehabilitation so horses can have a productive secondary career. L&FHRF is always in need of qualified trainers to provide equine foster retraining. Trainers assume temporary care responsibilities and then return the horse when it is in condition for adoption. The time and necessary upkeep required throughout the schooling are considered a tax-deductible contribution. Temporary sites where horses can receive lay-up time are also needed. All foster care, including time and supplies, is tax deductible.

The facility includes a 15-stall horse bank barn, conference building, pony barn, office area and corn crib. Approximately 30 volunteers handle the weekly chores required to take care of all the L&FHRF animals.

L&FHRF is committed to providing quality treatment for all equines. A main goal is to educate horse owners about optimal conditions for the horses in their care. This is accomplished in part by attending shows and expos, granting newspaper interviews and participating in public speaking events to create a higher awareness of equine care. Founder Kelly Young has spoken at congressional hearings to help enact or reinforce legislation aimed at preventing inhumane equine practices around the country. The program has been featured in the New York Times and Practical Horseman, and in national and local news, television, radio and books.

For The Horse Farms Open House: Lost and Found will have blacksmith and equine dentistry demonstrations, refreshments, and visitors can meet horses available for adoption.
